Lead chart for: Bruno Fernandes: is he declining? Not where it matters

The short answerBruno Fernandes had his most creative Premier League season in 2025-26, with 0.37 expected assists per 90, the 99th percentile among midfielders. This season his passing is still elite, but his progressive runs and defensive actions have fallen sharply. The best fit is a deeper creative role, ideally at Manchester United.

Bruno Fernandes is 32 and his contract runs out in June 2027. Manchester United have an option to extend it by a year, and talks over a longer deal are reported to be stuck on one question: how many more years he has at the top. Reports say Al Hilal remain interested, a Galatasaray link has cooled, and pundits are already asking whether January is the moment to cash in. Nothing has been agreed and United are reported to want to keep him. We can't tell you what will happen. We can test the assumption behind the whole debate: that he is about to decline.

Here's the non-obvious part. On our numbers, the decline everyone is pricing in hasn't reached his passing. His last full season was the most creative of the six we can rank. What is going is something else: the running and the defending. That changes which club, and which role, makes sense for him.

Six seasons in the top 6%

We ranked Fernandes against every Premier League midfielder with 900 league minutes in each season from 2020-21 to 2025-26, and against those with 270 minutes so far this season. His percentiles for expected assists, the quality of the chances he sets up regardless of the finish, read 96, 95, 96, 99, 94, 99. He has been in the top 6% of the league's midfielders in every one of those seasons.

Then look at 2025-26. He played 3,403 league minutes, scored 9 and set up 18. His expected assists came to 14.1, or 0.37 per 90, his highest rate in the six full seasons in our data. His 2.88 shot assists per 90 were the most of any Premier League midfielder with 900 minutes. A player whose creative engine was failing would not produce his best creative season at 31 going on 32.

Line chart of Fernandes expected assists per 90 by season against the Premier League midfielder median-to-top-10% band
Expected assists per 90 by season, against the band between the median and top 10% of Premier League midfielders. 2026-27 is eight games.

This season's sample is small, eight games and 696 minutes, so we hold it loosely. But the passing signals are the same or stronger. He is in the 100th percentile among Premier League midfielders for progressive passes and for passes into the box, and the 99th for shot assists. He has 4 league goals from chances worth 3.4. His expected assists percentile has dipped to 82, still well inside the top fifth.

What is actually changing

The real signal is in the bottom rows of the chart. Fernandes has never been a big tackler. His percentile for successful defensive actions has sat between the 19th and 53rd over six seasons. But he has always carried the ball, in the 57th to 67th percentile for progressive runs every year. This season both have dropped: progressive runs to the 10th percentile (0.39 per 90) and defensive actions to the 6th (2.72 per 90).

Two cautions. Eight games is a small sample, and part of the change could be role rather than legs: a player asked to sit deeper and pass will carry less. Even so, it is the pattern you'd expect at 32. Passing range and vision age slowly. The repeated sprints of a pressing number 10 do not. Any club signing him, or extending him, is buying the first and should stop paying for the second.

This season's sample is small, eight games and 696 minutes, so we hold it loosely.

What that means for the fit

That is the useful answer to "should he stay or go". The question isn't whether Fernandes is still good. On creation he is still elite by any measure we have. The question is whether the team around him asks him to do the things that are fading. A side that needs its number 10 to lead the press and carry the ball 40 yards will see the decline first. A side that gives him the ball deeper, with runners ahead and a ball-winner beside him, will get the best of what he still has.

United, on our ratings, are 1750, 5th in the Premier League and 10th in the world. Fernandes's numbers say his best version for the next three years is probably as one of the deeper midfielders, receiving the ball facing play, rather than as the attacking midfielder behind the striker who is expected to press first. That's a coaching decision, not a transfer.

The destinations, on our ratings

Stay at Manchester United. Our model says this is the highest level available to him by a distance. United, at 1750, are the strongest side in the picture, and his passing numbers are still among the best in the league. If the contract can be structured around a deeper role and fewer minutes, staying is the best football fit.

Al Hilal. Reported to remain interested. They are rated 1678 and 27th in the world on our ratings, about 72 points below United. That is roughly the level of a mid-table Premier League side. The style question matters less there: a dominant team in its league lets a creator play deeper and receive the ball. It is the most comfortable football fit for the player he is becoming, and the biggest step down in competition.

Galatasaray. Linked in the summer, and that interest is now reported to have cooled. Rated 1600, 45th in the world, 150 points below United. They play in Europe and dominate the ball in their own league, which suits a deeper creator. It's a real step down, but it keeps him in the Champions League conversation.

We also show two clubs nobody has linked with him, Benfica (1739) and Sporting CP (1694), for context only. He made his name in Lisbon with Sporting before moving to Manchester. On our ratings the Portuguese giants sit in the same band as the clubs that have been linked.

Our verdict

Creation: elite. Legs: fading. Best fit: United, in a deeper role. The case for selling Fernandes rests on the idea that he's about to fall off. The numbers don't show that in his passing. His last full season was his most creative, and this season's passing is still at the very top. What they do show is a player doing less running and less defending, which is exactly how a creative midfielder should be managed into his mid-30s. United's sensible move is a contract that pays for the passing and a role that stops asking for the running. A buyer's sensible move is the same. Pay for three good years of passing, not for a pressing number 10.

There's a wider lesson here for anyone valuing older creative players. The public debate tends to treat age as one number that drags every part of a player's game down together. The data rarely works like that. Different skills age at different speeds, and the smart contract is the one that pays for what is still at the top.

What would change our mind? If his expected assists stay below the 85th percentile over a full half-season, the decline would have reached the thing that matters. Until then, the argument that he's finished is about his legs, not his passing.

FAQ

Is Bruno Fernandes leaving Manchester United?

Nothing is agreed. His contract runs to June 2027 with a club option for a further year. Reports say talks on a new deal are ongoing, Al Hilal remain interested and Galatasaray's interest has cooled. We analyse the player, not the deal.

Is Bruno Fernandes in decline?

Not as a creator. 2025-26 was his best season for expected assists in our data. This season, though, his progressive runs and defensive actions have fallen sharply in a small sample, which suggests a deeper role suits him now.

Where should Bruno Fernandes play next?

On our ratings, Manchester United are the strongest option by some distance. Al Hilal and Galatasaray, the two clubs that have been linked, both rate below United and would suit a deeper creative role.
