Lead chart for: Dortmund v Bremen: closer than the brands suggest

The short answerDortmund’s rating falls −21 points once opponents are counted; Bremen’s moves −4. Bremen’s schedule ranks 3rd of 18 in the Bundesliga for toughness, Dortmund 13th. Ratings still favour Dortmund by about a goal a game, but the season gap is narrower than the brands suggest.

Borussia Dortmund host Werder Bremen in the DFB-Pokal second round tonight at Signal Iduna Park, 19:45 UK. On the league table and on our ratings this looks straightforward: Dortmund are third in the Bundesliga on our numbers, Bremen eighth, and the rating gap is about 1.1 goals a game. The same two sides drew 2-2 in the league earlier this month. Once you count who each club has actually played, the cup tie looks closer than the brands suggest.

That is the Index question for tonight. Not “who is the better club”, because Dortmund still are. The question is whether Dortmund’s season so far has been padded by a soft run of fixtures, and whether Bremen’s has been stress-tested by a hard one.

Signal Iduna Park on a Pokal night is a different animal from a Sunday league fixture, but the data question travels. Dortmund’s rating falls by 21 points once every game is judged against the opponent. Bremen’s barely moves. Bremen have also faced one of the tougher schedules in the division. That is still an edge for the hosts. It is not a procession.

The schedule gap

From this week, every performance in our ranking is weighed against the opponent it came against. Dortmund’s opponent adjustment is −21 rating points: the soft run has been costing them on the scale, not padding them. Bremen’s adjustment is −4. On schedule toughness within the Bundesliga, Bremen rank 3rd of 18; Dortmund rank 13th. Same division, different tests.

Negative means a softer set of opponents pulled the rating down; positive means a tougher set lifted it.

What the league games have looked like

Dortmund’s football still creates. In the league games in our detailed export they averaged more than two expected goals a game at home against Hamburg and Paderborn, and they took a point at Union Berlin in a game that was basically even on chances. The 2-2 with Bremen on 9 October is the useful reference for tonight: Dortmund created the better chances and still dropped points. Cup football, at home, with a crowd that expects a win, is a different night. It is not a different opponent.

Bremen’s season is messier and more interesting. They were hammered 4-1 at Freiburg, then beat Leipzig 3-1 at home despite conceding chances worth more than two expected goals. They have drawn with Köln, Dortmund and Paderborn. The pattern is a side that can hurt anyone on its day and can also leak. Our luck measure has them 3.9 points ahead of what their performances deserve, one of the bigger surpluses in the league. Results have been kinder to Bremen than the chances.

Ratings still favour Dortmund

None of this turns Bremen into favourites. Our ratings put Dortmund at 1660, 29th in the world and third in the Bundesliga. Bremen are 1469, 117th and eighth. Around 180 points is worth a goal a game, so the structural gap is still about a goal. Opponent adjustment answers a narrower question: how much of this season’s rating is about the fixtures rather than the teams.

The 2-2 with Bremen on 9 October is the useful reference for tonight: Dortmund created the better chances and still dropped points.
Beaumont Index ratings for selected Bundesliga clubs
Dortmund remain clearly above Bremen on the longer-run rating.

Dortmund are rated steady. Bremen are rated rising, which matches the eye test of a side that has competed with better opponents than the table admits. In a one-off cup tie, rising plus a hard schedule is exactly the profile that produces an away upset if the favourite is slightly flat.

The cup context

This is the second meeting in three weeks. The league draw already showed Bremen can score twice at this ground. The Pokal adds a different pressure: Dortmund are expected to progress, Bremen are expected to spoil. Cup ties compress variance. A side that has been taking more points than its chances warrant, facing a side whose rating has been trimmed by a soft schedule, is exactly the recipe for a noisy night even when the rating gap is real.

Dortmund’s recent league run includes a goalless draw at Union Berlin in which neither side created much, and a home draw with Bremen that will sit in both dressing rooms tonight. They have also beaten Stuttgart away and put three past Hoffenheim. The floor is high. The ceiling on any given midweek depends on whether the soft-schedule version of Dortmund or the rating version turns up.

Bremen’s away form is the other half of the story. Losses and draws on the road have mixed with the home win over Leipzig. Our rising trend flag on Bremen is not a prediction that they will win in Dortmund. It is a note that the underlying direction has been up while the fixture list has been hard. Strip out the schedule and they look less like an eighth-placed side hanging on and more like a mid-table side that has been stress-tested.

Three things to watch tonight. First, whether Dortmund’s chance volume holds against a Bremen side that has already sat deep at this ground and scored twice. Second, whether Bremen’s finishing runs hot again: they have taken more points than their chances warrant, and cup ties reward that kind of variance. Third, game state. If Dortmund score early, the schedule story probably does not matter. If it is still 0-0 after an hour, the adjusted numbers say Bremen are entitled to believe they belong.

None of this asks you to pick against Dortmund on the longer-run rating. It asks you to stop reading the brands as a formality. A side rated a goal a game better, with a soft-schedule adjustment of about twenty points against them, hosting a rising side with a hard schedule and a luck surplus, is a cup tie with a proper shape. That is the Index preview.

Cup football compresses the season into one night. The Index still prefers Dortmund. The schedule and luck columns are why Bremen get a proper preview rather than a formality line.

The verdict

Dortmund are better. The tie is closer than the brands. Ratings still favour Dortmund by about a goal a game. Bremen’s harder schedule and rising trend mean this is a cup night, not a formality. Respect the gap. Do not invent a different match.

We will update the Index after tonight. For now the preview stands on results to Sunday morning 25 October: Dortmund still ahead on rating, Bremen still closer than the brands suggest once schedules are counted, and the schedule gap still the main reason this cup night should not be waved through as a formality for the hosts.

What would change our mind? If Dortmund’s opponent adjustment stays deeply negative over a month of tougher fixtures, the soft-schedule caveat fades. If Bremen keep outperforming their chances by four points or more, the luck will eventually regress. Tonight is one match. The schedule story is why it is worth watching as a contest rather than a formality.

One more note on method. Opponent adjustment reweights each performance against the opponent faced. League and continental matches count fully; cup matches count half. That is why a Pokal preview can lean on the league-adjusted picture without pretending tonight is just another Bundesliga Sunday.
