Lead chart for: World club ranking 2026: Barcelona lose the Clásico and go top

The short answerBarcelona are first in our world club ranking on 1914, three points ahead of Arsenal and six ahead of Bayern, so the top three are effectively level. Arsenal are the luckiest team in the Premier League, 6.4 points ahead of their football. Forest are the unluckiest in Europe's top five leagues.

Barcelona lost the Clásico last Sunday and are the best club in the world again this morning. That sounds wrong, and it is the most useful thing in this week's ranking. A single result moves a rating far less than people expect, and the gap at the top is now so small that it means very little.

Barcelona are on 1914, Arsenal on 1911 and Bayern München on 1908. Six points separate the top three. On our scale, about 180 points is worth a goal a game, so six points is roughly one goal every 30 matches. Each of the three has a plausible range that runs from first to fifth or sixth. Put plainly, there is no single best club in the world this week. There is a group of three, and then a clear drop to PSG on 1851.

The second thing worth knowing is about Arsenal. They have just won at Anfield, they lead the Premier League by three points, and their rating went down by two. That is not a quirk. Arsenal have 24 points from nine games, while the football they have played deserved about 17.6. Their performances are still the best in England, but their points are running 6.4 ahead of them, and a rating built on performance does not pay out for a lead that the football has not fully earned.

A note on the numbers

This edition uses results through Monday 2 November 2026, updated on 3 November. It includes last weekend's games and the Sunday games we could not count a week ago, including the Clásico and Manchester United's 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth. Ratings sit on one world scale, where 1500 is an average club from Europe's top five leagues.

One change to how we report movers. Each club's rating move now has two parts. One part comes from the football played this week. The other comes from re-rating the opponents a club has already faced, because when those opponents turn out better or worse than we thought, every earlier game is judged again. Where the second part is large, we say so, because a club should not get credit for a move that has no football behind it.

The best football clubs in the world: ranking for 2026, week 45

This is our ranking of the best football clubs in the world for 2026, as of this week. Barcelona (1914), Arsenal (1911) and Bayern (1908) form the top three. PSG (1851) are fourth, Manchester City (1847) fifth and Real Madrid (1838) sixth. Liverpool, Benfica, Bournemouth and Brighton complete the top ten.

How Barcelona got back to first. Barcelona's rating rose by 15 in a week that included a 2-1 home defeat by Real Madrid. Two things explain it. The first is the 6-1 win over Alavés the following Saturday, which was a far bigger performance than the Clásico was a setback. A narrow defeat to the sixth-best side in the world costs little, and a dominant win counts for a lot. The second is that about 10 of the 15 points came from re-rating Barcelona's earlier opponents. Several sides they had beaten have since played better than we thought, so those wins now count for more. Barcelona have 30 points from 11 LaLiga games, almost exactly what their football deserved.

Real Madrid gained more. Madrid rose by 21, the biggest gain in the top ten. Winning at the Camp Nou will do that. They stay sixth because the five clubs above them are all at least 9 points clear.

Bayern are underrated by their own results. Bayern drew 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, with Harry Kane hitting the bar from the penalty spot. They have 18 points from eight games, and their football deserved about 3.9 more. That makes Bayern the only member of the top three whose points total undersells them. If any of the three is due a strong run of results, it is Bayern.

Manchester City slipped to fifth after a 1-0 home defeat by Brighton. City have 21 points against 17.3 deserved. On performance they are the second-best side in England, only a fraction behind Arsenal. On the football played, the Premier League title race is far closer than the three-point gap says: Arsenal's deserved total is just 0.4 points higher than City's.

This week's risers

Here are the biggest moves in and around the top 100, with each split into what came from the football and what came from re-rating opponents.

Bar chart splitting each club’s rating change this week into the part from its own football and the part from re-rating its opponents
Navy = the football played this week. Gold = earlier games judged again as opponents were re-rated.

Bournemouth (+25, 15th to 9th). This is the cleanest rise of the week. Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford and then beat Leeds 2-0, and about 28 points of the gain came from those games alone. They are now ninth in the world, above Brighton, and the fourth-highest Premier League club, behind Arsenal, City and Liverpool. Their league position, eighth on 12 points, is close to what their football deserved.

PSG (+12, 5th to 4th). PSG beat Le Havre 5-1. Their football was worth about 24 points this week, but some of last week's credit for a hard schedule was taken back as their opponents were re-rated, which is why the net move is smaller.

Twente (+30, 74th to 61st). Twente won 9-0 at Excelsior, the biggest league win in the club's history, with Wout Weghorst scoring four. Excelsior had a player sent off inside five minutes, so the scoreline overstates it a little. Even so, the football behind it was overwhelming, and almost all of the rise is earned.

Ipswich Town (+55, 100th to 71st). This is the move to be careful with. Ipswich drew 2-2 at Hull, a game they controlled for long spells. Their football this week was slightly below their rating, worth about −7. The whole rise, and a little more, comes from re-rating the clubs they have already played. Last week our numbers treated Ipswich's early schedule as much easier than it now looks. We would rather tell you that than dress up a draw as a breakthrough. Ipswich are about where a promoted side with 11 points from nine games should be.

This week's fallers

Atalanta (−28, 71st to 89th). Atalanta lost 0-3 at home to Parma on Monday night, and the football behind their fall is about 31 points. The bigger story is what came before. Atalanta's results had been running 5.6 points ahead of their football, and on deserved points they are 19th of 20 in Serie A. Monday was not a shock. It was the table catching up with the performances, and it may not be finished.

Bayer Leverkusen (−22, 11th to 16th). Leverkusen lost 4-2 at home to Stuttgart and the football part of their fall is about 29 points. Unlike Atalanta, they have been unlucky: 13 points from eight games, 6.3 fewer than their football deserved. A heavy home defeat still counts, but Leverkusen remain a top-20 side in the world.

Manchester United (−16, 14th to 17th). Two defeats, 3-0 at home to Bournemouth and 2-0 at Chelsea, took about 28 points off United's rating. Part of that was offset as their earlier opponents were re-rated upwards, and United have faced the 5th-toughest schedule in the Premier League. The table and the football still disagree sharply. United are 17th on points, with 7 from nine games, yet 6th on the points their football deserved, about 15.0. That 8.0-point gap is one of the biggest in Europe. It does not make Bournemouth or Chelsea flukes; United were well beaten at Old Trafford. It does mean the league table is harsher on them than their season as a whole.

The Luck Table: the luckiest and unluckiest teams

The Luck Table compares the points each club has won with the points its football deserved, based on the quality of the chances it created and allowed, often called expected goals or xG. Positive means a club is ahead of its football. Negative means it has been short-changed. Across Europe's top five leagues, our model labels 24 clubs lucky and 24 unlucky, out of 96.

Arsenal are the luckiest team in the Premier League. Their 24 points are 6.4 more than their football deserved. That is not a knock on their football: Arsenal still have the best deserved points rate in the league. It does mean that the three-point lead over City is mostly the lucky part. The Anfield game was a fair example. Arsenal had three shots on target and Liverpool none, but Liverpool had 17 shots in total and hit the crossbar.

Chelsea are next (+5), and they come with an asterisk. They have 16 points against 11.0 deserved, and they are only 12th in the league on deserved points. But no club has faced a harder schedule in England. Chelsea are winning more than their football suggests against good sides, which is easier to sustain than winning more against poor ones.

Aston Villa (+5) are the warning case. Villa have 12 points against 7.1 deserved, and they are last in the Premier League on deserved points. No club in England is further ahead of its own football in relative terms. City (+4) complete the lucky group.

The unluckiest: Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and United. Forest have 6 points from nine games, while their football deserved 16.5. That 10.5-point shortfall is the biggest in any of Europe's top five leagues. Forest are 4th in the Premier League on deserved points and 19th in the real table, and they have done it against the second-toughest schedule. Sunderland are bottom with 5 points, against 13.8 deserved; their football ranks 9th. Manchester United, as above, are 8.0 short. If you want to know which bottom-half clubs are most likely to climb, start with these three.

Across Europe

The Luck Table. Gold = points ahead of the football, red = points behind it.

Lazio are the luckiest team in Europe's big five for a second week. They have 28 points from ten games against 16.0 deserved, a gap of 12.0. Last week it was 9.2, so the gap is still growing. On deserved points Lazio are only 9th in Serie A. Atlético Madrid are third on this list (+8, 28 points from 11), and Arsenal are eighth.

Juventus remain the clearest case of a good side under-rewarded. They have 17 points from ten games against 24.1 deserved, a shortfall of 7.1, yet their football is the second-best in Serie A on deserved points. Villarreal are in the same position in Spain: 12 points from 11 against 20.9 deserved, the third-biggest shortfall in the top five leagues.

Luck in this sense is not a mystery force. It is finishing, goalkeeping and the bounce of a ball over a short run of games. Over a full season those things tend to even out, which is why a club's rating follows its performances rather than its points.

What to watch next

The top three will not stay tied for long. Barcelona, Arsenal and Bayern are six points apart, and a strong week for any one of them will open a gap. Bayern are the side whose results have lagged their football, so they are the ones to watch.

Atalanta and Lazio are the corrections in waiting. Both are well ahead of their football. Atalanta's started on Monday night. Lazio's has not started yet.

Forest, Sunderland and United are owed points. None of them is guaranteed to collect, but the football says all three should climb if it continues.

Every club's rating, schedule and luck figure is on its club page, and the full table is in the world club ranking. How the ranking works explains the method in plain words. Next Tuesday's update adds this week's European games and the weekend's league fixtures.
